One of the beautiful privileges of being human is having the power and ability to choose. Life is full of choices. The choice ‘to do or not to do,‘ ‘to go or not to go‘. From dawn to dusk, we are faced with hundreds of choices to make. Even in our set routines (for those who have them), choice still exists in how we execute those routines. 

As beautiful as it is to know that you have the power to make your own choices, it should also be mentioned that every choice has a consequence. That, in a way, is good news because ‘consequences’ in itself is not a negative word. The dictionary defines it simply as being result or effect. The result or effect of a choice can be positive or negative. 

Oh, how exciting when we make good choices and get results! Like the choice of building good daily habits—irrespective of convenience—and sticking to them. The choice of creating the right environment to thrive; the choice of staying away from bad decisions no matter how temporarily tempting they may appear; the choice of holding fast to positive and godly information and in doing so choosing growth and development. The list goes on. Just as these good choices exist, so also do negative ones and their consequences.  

Despite all having the power of choice, one thing we do not have is the power to choose the consequences of our choices. 

Deuteronomy 30: 19b – 20 (MSG) puts it this way  

I place before you Life and Death, Blessing and Curse. Choose life so that you and your children will live. And love GOD, your God, listening obediently to him, firmly embracing him. Oh yes, he is life itself, a long life settled on the soil that GOD, your God, promised to give your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  

We have a choice between life and death and our daily actions point to what choice we are making. I would like to point out that we are no longer under the curse and cannot be cursed according to Galatians 3: 13-14. Christ became a curse for us and absorbed the curse, so we are all free from the curse and instead we have blessings!  

Galatians 3:13-14 MSG. Christ redeemed us from that self-defeating, cursed life by absorbing it completely into himself. Do you remember the Scripture that says, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”? That is what happened when Jesus was nailed to the cross: He became a curse, and at the same time dissolved the curse. And now, because of that, the air is cleared and we can see that Abraham’s blessing is present and available for non-Jews, too. We are all able to receive God’s life, his Spirit, in and with us by believing—just the way Abraham received it. 

There is life in God. He is life and choosing to walk with Him definitely leads to experiencing life and abundance. Our walk with God should be a daily walk: trusting Him to help us with decisions and directions, acknowledging that we are nothing without Him and with Him we can do all things.  

Whatever choices you are faced with, ask yourself, is the choice I am about to make leading to life (blessing, health, increase) or is it leading to death (selfishness, flesh, sin). If you are constantly experiencing consequences which are negative maybe it is time to look at some of your daily choices.
