Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.
Romans 13:8 NKJV
The word love, in my humble opinion, is one of the most misunderstood and misused words of all times. While so many things may be described as love, for the purpose of this blog, we shall be focusing on love without any strings, that is, the agape kind, the God kind.
Every believer in christ have in them this love when they receive christ into their hearts because God is love, now the choice to let this love out is entirely up to the individual.
The verse of scripture above says do not Owe anyone ( this is such a wise counsel as the borrower is always servant to the lender . Proverbs 22:7 ) . While this blog is not on finances, we ought to as a rule of thumb, avoid where ever possible being indebted to others, yet, there is a debt that every human being has as long as they are alive and that is a debt to love others.
To owe is to have an obligation to pay something or repay in return for something received. This passage of bible was written to Christians; believers in christ who have received God’s love, not unbelievers ( you can not give what you don’t have ) .
Every Christian has a responsibility to love his or her neighbour and by neighbour here, I am not referring to the person who lives next door to you but
everyone you come in contact with who needs the love of God that is already inside you. ( Luke 10 29- 37 )
Remember, love is not a feeling. Love is a person, the person of Jesus Christ living through us, working through compassion when there is a need. This love, according to Romans 12, seeks to honour others , is ready to help people in need, and is eager to practice hospitality.
How do you truly love ? By blessing those who persecute you. Have you been in prayer meetings where fire is rained down on people who don’t agree with us ? The word persecute is to subject someone to hostility and ill-treatment, and the love response to that would be to pray that God blesses them and not to curse them.
Love seeks the good of those who hurt
and harm us. I must say that putting yourself in harms way or allowing and tolerating abuse in anyway is not love but a lack of wisdom, so this is not about sitting there and letting someone or people ride over you but this is about having a godly response to a godless situation. When someone hurts you, the natural reaction of the flesh would be to hurt back, but this is not so with the love of God. The response of love towards hurt is forgiveness, and in forgiveness is freedom. Hurt and unforgiveness eat up the heart which carries them not the person who caused the hurt and you cannot get rid of hurt through will power, you need the love of God flowing from you towards that person or situation.
Looking at chapter 12 of the book of Romans, verse 10 says, “Love each other with genuine affection and take delight in honouring each other.” Does another person’s success bring you joy? Are you genuinely happy when someone else ( I am not talking about your friend or family member) succeeds even when that success outshines you? Do you feel a genuine sadness when someone else fails?
A line of verse which I am not in a hurry to rush past is “Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people”…
Take a pause for a moment to reflect on the company you keep and how you chose that company ( or how they chose you ) .
You are obligated to feed your enemies. If you are in a position where you could help someone who has been really terrible to you, the love of God compels you to help them without expecting
anything in return. This is the debt you and I owe and you would agree with me that this kind of life is not possible from the flesh, this is a God kind of life which is possible and available to all as we surrender our lives to God, who himself is love.
Please get in touch if you need someone to agree with you in prayers for anything.
Much Blessings
