I believe that this is one of the most significant prayers of all times and is as relevant today, if not more, as it was when Paul made it those centuries ago.
Every believer in Christ knows Jesus, after all, that’s how you came to accept His gift of salvation but the knowledge of him which Paul is referring to in the above passage is beyond the initial heart knowledge, it is an experiential knowledge which in turn, causes transformation. To know Jesus is to know His person and in the knowledge of His person, you are changed.
There were so many people who were around Jesus from the start of His ministry till the end and still were not impacted, not because they were not physically present, but they did not pay attention to who Jesus was and what was happening before their very eyes.
To know someone is not just a knowledge of their names and what they do. To know someone is to know about them; who they are, the sort of things they like and dislike, what makes them different, and knowing Jesus is more than just accepting His gift of salvation.
“That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being conformed to his death.” Philippians 3: 10 NKJV
In today’s blog, we are going to look at some of the attributes of who Jesus is and the first one, I would like to point out is that Jesus is the Saviour: For the benefit of anyone who might not know, Jesus came to earth about 2000 years ago to rescue mankind from sin. This He accomplished through death on the cross. Jesus took the place of man, so that Man can be in right standing with God and I have listed a few bible references: Romans 3: 9-10, 23, 6: 23, John 3:16.
Another important truth we need to know about Jesus is that He is Lord:
Having Jesus as your saviour is not the same as having Jesus as your lord, and knowing that Jesus is lord is not the same as submitting to Him as your Lord.
The word Lord in the Hebrew yehhovaw means the self-Existent or Eternal. This in itself means that Jesus would still be Lord of the universe, if no one existed.
In Greek, the word “Lord” is kurios, meaning supreme in authority, controller.
If you say that Jesus is your Lord, then you would have to submit to His Lordship (His supreme authority, His control)
Submitting to Jesus’ authority is submitting to His word.
The word of God is not a byproduct of what we do as Christians. It is the very essence of who we are.
‘The Son is the dazzling radiance of God’s splendor, the exact expression of God’s true nature—his mirror image! He holds the universe together and expands it by the mighty power of his spoken word.” Hebrews 1:3a TPT
This verse in Hebrews, says that God holds the universe together and expands it by His word (the word expands there is to advance or move along) your advancement as one of God’s creations can only happen with you submitting to the principles of the word of God.
When we apply the word, we get word results.
Another way we submit to Jesus’s authority is to be submitted to those He has put over us.
‘Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. [2]Therefore, whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.” Romans 13: 1-2 NKJV
Notice verse 2 says those who resist authority bring judgment on themselves?
Resisting authority is like a car engine attempting to function without oil ,the oil to the engine is what submitting to authority is like, it enables the smooth running of the entire machine. When someone steps out of authority or goes against authority, it becomes like the engine trying to function without oil. It never ends well. It leads to a life of friction and breakdowns.
Do you share control of your life with Him? Is your life a 50/50 custody, or has Jesus full ownership?
I believe the Lordship of Jesus is something we have taken too casually and hence do not see the full benefits of a fully submitted life.
Every blessing
