The story of Bartimaeus in Mark 10: 46 – 47 is one packed with so many lessons anyone could learn from it and I for one, have learned that a personal deficiency is no excuse for one not to thrive. Bartimaeus was blind yet did not make excuses when an opportunity presented itself for him to apply himself.
Do you identify with a certain disability or limitation in your life ? And has that limitation defined the rest of you ?
In the case of Bartimaeus, the man was truly blind and had a coat to prove it( Mark 10: 50 ). The coak he wore was not a fancy dressing, nor was it a rag due to poverty, it was an identification to prove that he had been certified blind by the authorities, meaning checks of some sort had been conducted to show he wasn’t lying or faking it.
“Now they came to Jericho. As He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging. [47] And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” [48] Then many warned him to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” [49] So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. Then they called the blind man, saying to him, “Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you.” [50] And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus.”
Mark 10: 46 -50 NKJV
Now, though Bartimaeus was by the roadside begging, he had something inside of him that made him see( vision)beyond where he was, he had hope that his situation could change and that was the difference between him and every other begger in town around that time.
No matter your loss in life, what you may not have, and what disabilities you may have, one thing you never give up is hope.
The word hope in Greek means “to anticipate with pleasure, expectation, or confidence.”
You may wonder what world I am living in to expect someone to have hope in certain situations, and I tell you that hope is the only separating factor between life and death. Hopelessness leads to death. Sadly, a lot of people die inside long before they physically die just by giving up hope.
This hope is not merely a feeling as feelings are fickle. This hope is a confident belief , an expectation based on knowledge that comes from information. In Bartimaeus’ case, he heard about Jesus. Bartimaeus was blind so he couldn’t see, but he made use of something he had, and that was his hearing.
You may be vulnerable in an area of your life or feel incapacitated, but you still have something going for you, and when you discover what that is, you have to put it to work. when you put to work what you have, what you don’t have will come to you. All is not lost if you believe. Blind Bartimaeus used his hearing and also acted on what he heard. When he heard that the solution to his problem was within reach ( Jesus passing by), he did something about it. Nothing conventional, I might add, but that did not stop him, Bartimaeus cried out for help. Not help from the crowd nor the passers-by, but to the one who could offer him solution.
I know that some have had very terrible experiences as a result of crying out to the wrong people and rather than being uplifted, they have been trampled upon whilst wounded but crying out to the right person or people is never a sign of weakness.
Bartimaeus didn’t know much about Jesus, but he cried out anyway. You may be reading this and like Bartimaeus have heard about Jesus but dont know much about him, I have goodnews for you , what you know is enough to cry out to him, infact you don’t have to scream like Bartimaeus , all you have to do is call out to Him with a sincere heart and He will answer. ( Jeremiah 33:3 )
You may know Him and have a relationship with Him yet struggle in some areas, today, why not surrender your struggles to Him, (that’s what Bartimaeus did when he took his coat off ) and let Him take care of you.
Every blessing
