Following with purpose

The other day, I boarded a train and got off at an unfamiliar station. It appeared as though everyone who got off was headed in the same direction, so without any thoughts, I joined them.

There were no obvious signs for exit, but there were sets of stairs that led to other platforms.  So, just like clockwork, we all walked towards the stairs and started making our way up.

I instinctively checked to see if anyone else was going in a different direction but didn’t notice anything, so I carried on with the rest of the crowd.

At the point of decent, on the other side, I turned around and asked 2 school girls who were behind me if I was in the right direction towards the exit.  They graciously shook their heads and redirected me  towards where I was coming from.

In that short instance, I had an opportunity to reflect on a few areas of life, one of which raised a question:

‘Why do you do what you do’?

As simple as this question may sound, answering it is not always that simple purely for the reason that so many people have not the faintest clue as to why they do what they do.

You can find a whole lot of people walking in a particular direction simply because it’s a popular direction or because everyone else is going there( just like my situation at the train station).

People don’t take the time to ask, why am I following this trend, why am I on social media,  why do I do this job , why did I take this career path, why am I in this relationship,  why did I react the way I did in that situation, the list goes on but the simple fact is that lacking purpose in any pursuit could end in disaster.

Following others without an understanding of our own purpose often leads to  disappointment since their journey may not be the same as ours.

So, like the Apostle Paul said,

“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”
1 Corinthians 11:1 NIV

Our cue to following is following the path that sure leads to where we are headed or where we intend to be headed.

Never follow blindly unless your lead is following Christ.

Every blessing
Kingdom
